“Unpacking” Common Core standards: K-2

Let’s just admit it- this whole “unpacking” standards thing is a tremendously large task. I think it’s safe to say, if there aren’t some collective decisions made, it’s possible that gaps are going to continue to be created.

I do love the idea of the public education system coming together to create common expectations. I also love the fact that they are broad enough for individual interpretation. On the same token, Could this lead to “misinterpretation” or mistrust?

In the district I currently teach at, we are getting together with grade level partners and discussing the “essential” standards that will be expected for each grade level. Let me clarify, all standards will be addressed. The chosen “essential standards” will be assessed (using common assessments) and have an expected level of mastery per grade level. For example,
In Kindergarten, while all standards will be addressed throughout the school year, the Foundational Skills listed under Kindergarten expectations will be expected to be mastered by the end of the Kindergarten year.
